The design of sports fields today is a dynamic field that is constantly developing. Choosing the right surface, once a simple decision, today requires careful analysis and alignment with the type of sport and the desired performance. Innovative materials and technologies allow us to create surfaces that are not only durable, but also adapted to the different needs of athletes. But the sports field is not only a place for training and competition - it is a community center that brings together people of different ages and interests. A well-designed field encourages a healthy lifestyle, develops sportsmanship and strengthens the sense of belonging. Investing in sports infrastructure is investing in the future of our community, and designing sports fields is increasingly becoming an art of combining functionality, aesthetics and social responsibility.

Sports facilities were built in the yard of the Ivan Goran Kovačić Elementary School in Velika – an athletics track with field event areas, plus courts for basketball, handball, five-a-side football, volleyball, "graničar" and an outdoor fitness area.

REPAIR AND RENOVATION OF OSIJEK HIGH SCHOOL PLAYGROUND

In Istarska ulica 1/D in Osijek (plot no. 5989/7, Osijek cadastral zone), a secondary-school sports complex was repaired and renovated: a new six-lane, 333 m athletics track (synthetic surfacing, Herculan SR National or equivalent), throwing/jumping event areas, refurbished football, basketball and volleyball courts, and a new bocce court.

In Istarska ulica 1/D in Osijek (plot no. 5989/7, Osijek cadastral zone), repair and renovation works were carried out on a secondary-school sports complex that included an athletics track, a long-jump runway and pit, five football pitches, a basketball court, two volleyball courts, a skate park, and an outdoor gym (the skate park and outdoor gym were kept in their existing state and were not part of this project). The existing athletics track and long-jump runway/pit were removed, and a new circular six-lane, 333 m track was built in their place, with an additional eight-lane 100 m straight incorporated into the circular track, finished with a synthetic permeable surface such as Herculan SR National or equivalent, 13-14 mm thick, applied in situ. Stormwater drainage is handled by infiltration into a new drainage system on the inner side of the track. Throwing and jumping event areas were built: a shot-put area, a long-jump/triple-jump runway (long-jump board only), a pole-vault runway, and a high-jump runway. The football pitch on the east side was rebuilt entirely from the subgrade up, with a minimum 25 cm base course, a 5 cm BNS 16 asphalt layer and a 3 cm AB 08 layer, finished with an acrylic asphalt coating such as DecoColor MP Classic 920-27 or equivalent, 1-2 mm thick. Three football pitches and one handball pitch within the track were repaired by cutting out and removing cracked and settled sections, patching with new asphalt, applying an emulsion spray coat over the whole surface, and adding a leveling asphalt layer (AB 08, approx. 3-4 cm), together with replacement of the edge drainage channel and gully gratings. The basketball court was refurbished by repairing a crack in the existing asphalt and edging it with a new polymer-concrete curb with a white rubber safety cap. The west volleyball court was extended to the required length while keeping its existing width, and the east court was removed down to all layers; both were edged with a polymer-concrete curb with a rubber safety cap. A new standard-size bocce court (28.5 × 4 m) was built on an asphalt base, covered with 0-4 mm graded eruptive stone, in accordance with Croatian Bocce Federation regulations.

Within the Grafičar Sports Centre in Osijek, the auxiliary full-size football field was reconstructed – converted from natural grass to artificial turf, to HNS and UEFA regulations.

Sports Courts, Krk Secondary School

Three new sports facilities have been built in the grounds of Krk Secondary School — a handball/five-a-side football pitch, a combined basketball/volleyball court, and an outdoor exercise zone with fitness equipment, all finished with synthetic sports surfacing.

In the grounds of Krk Secondary School, on part of cadastral plot 3260/1, k.o. Krk-grad, three new sports facilities have been built. The investor was the City of Krk, and the design was produced by ORKING d.o.o. The existing handball/five-a-side football pitch combined with a basketball court, finished in asphalt, was in poor condition and did not allow several sporting activities to take place at the same time, so at the request of the City of Krk, three separate sports units were designed.

The handball/five-a-side football pitch was built at 20 × 36 m with protective zones (24 × 42 m in total), finished with a permeable synthetic surface (SBR and EPDM) with a total thickness of 16 mm, built to EN 14877 and DIN 18035/6 standards. The playing surface itself is green (RAL 3016), with the surrounding safety zone in a darker green (RAL 3017). Two fixed and two portable aluminium five-a-side football goals were installed, to EN 748/749 standards.

The combined basketball/volleyball court was built to the north of the first pitch, with a 15 × 28 m basketball court and a 9 × 18 m volleyball court, totalling 17.5 × 32 m with protective zones. The surface follows the same construction as the handball pitch, finished in blue (RAL 5010) with the centre and key areas in a lighter blue (RAL 5015), FIBA-certified. Two basketball hoops with padded post protection and a volleyball net on demountable posts were installed.

North of the basketball/volleyball court, an outdoor exercise zone covering 357 m² was built, with a 10-13 mm synthetic surface in green (RAL 6017), equipped with push-up, arm-training, sit-up and torso-lift equipment, as well as posts and beams for walking and jumping exercises. All the equipment is made of galvanised, plasticised steel and Nordic spruce, to EN 16630 standard.

All the works included excavation down to the subgrade, geotextile, a stormwater drainage system and a two-layer permeable asphalt base beneath the synthetic surfaces, ensuring lasting and safe drainage for the pitches. With this project, the City of Krk and Krk Secondary School gained a modern, safe and functional sports and recreation area for physical education classes and extracurricular sporting activities.
